History

In 1876 the Belfast Boat Club started life as a rowing club. Hence its name. Tennis followed a few years later, around the same time as the prestigious Wimbledon club in London. The first lady member joined in April 1904 and in 1905 the then Committee started negotiations with the Belfast Corporation to extend the tram line to the bottom of the Stranmillis Road.

The original Victorian wooden Club house, which was deemed state of the art in its day was opened on the 12th September 1897 was blown up in ‘ the troubles’ in the 1970s. Today we have a modern club house comprising upstairs restaurant, downstairs bar, function room, squash courts, snooker room, fitness suite, sauna and changing rooms.

Down through the decades the Boat Club has produced champions in rowing, tennis and squash. Although the club enjoys all the pedigree of its history it has always remained at the forefront of sporting innovation, upgrading equipment, building a new Boat House and responding to the latest fitness regimes.
