Henley Royal Regatta
For the first time ever (or at least since the 1930s) there was a Belfast Boat Club crew at Henley Royal Regatta this year. Adam Boreham rowed in a Belfast Boat Club/ Inst composite double scull with Chris Beck in the Double Sculls Challenge Cup. Both scullers are members of the Rowing Ireland Development squad based at the club. They qualified without having to do a time trial as a result of their performance at Marlowe regatta. They were also seeded which meant that they did not have to race in the first round. Unfortunately they met a heavyweight American pair in the second round and had to row into a strong headwind. This pair had recently failed to qualify for the Olympic US team. The Belfast crew led to the end of the island but conditions did not suit them and the experience and strength of the opposition made the result inevitable. Getting qualification was an achievement in itself and the boys will have gained a lot from the experience. Watch out for future successes! They will be competing next week in the Irish Championship.
